Quick Start Guides · Digital downloads
It's the first of fifteen guides, and the code series behind it builds the same small app — so an afternoon with Python isn't a tidbit you forget, it's the start of something that keeps compiling. Written for busy professionals with a day job.

The code series
Every guide builds the same small app: CheckMate, a task tracker you write yourself. Foundations gets it running — installed, querying, styled, clickable, committed. Level 2 makes it real — a database behind it, an interface on top, structure you can defend, and a deploy that happens on its own.
That is why the guides aren't interchangeable with a free tutorial. Each one picks the app up exactly where the last one left it, so nothing you learn is stranded on its own.
See the whole shelf →The At Work set
This set builds something smaller and more ordinary: the Friday update you send from a folder of files. Files arrive, a script tidies them, the numbers get pulled out of whatever they came in, a draft gets checked against them, the page gets built, and the whole thing runs on a schedule.
No app to maintain, no account to keep, nothing that needs a server. Five guides for the part of a job that is the same every week, written for people who will never code professionally.
How a guide works
01
Fifteen guides in three collections: the beginner five and their Level 2 partners, both building one small app — CheckMate, a task tracker you write yourself — and five At Work guides for the part of a job that is the same every week. Start wherever your knowledge actually is.
02
Plain language, no jargon, no prerequisites. Written for the break between meetings, not for a semester. Page counts are printed on every guide so you know the size of what you're buying.
03
Every guide ends with a real result on your own machine — and hands the app on to the next guide, so the twenty minutes you just spent isn't the end of anything.
Look inside
Three real pages from the 25-page Python PDF — an explanation, a worked step, and the milestone at the end. This is exactly what arrives in your inbox.

What you can count on
Every guide is built the same way, so you always know what you're buying before you open it.
Jargon-free
If a word needs a glossary, it gets replaced with a sentence that explains itself.
Time-honest
Stated times are real times. Twenty minutes means twenty minutes, tested from a blank machine.
Zero prerequisites
Written assuming you have never opened a terminal. Nothing is skipped as obvious.
Instant download
A clean PDF, yours to keep. Read it on a laptop, a tablet, or printed and marked up.
The story
"SecondNature" isn't about leaving your first career behind. It's about the moment a subject stops feeling foreign and starts feeling obvious — learning kept up alongside the job you already have. Feeling stuck isn't a sign you need a new career; it's a sign you need a new skill. These guides are how that skill becomes second nature.
How the shelf is built
Five Foundations guides take CheckMate from an empty folder to a working, committed app. Five Level 2 guides rebuild it properly — related tables, a real interface, code with structure, and a site that deploys itself. Each one stands alone, and each one hands the project to the next.

About the founder
My day job was demolition and environmental construction. Python, SQL and everything else here I taught myself after work, starting from a blank computer with no idea what I was doing. I wrote each step down as I went, and those notes became these guides.
Most of what I picked up had nothing to do with construction on paper. Almost all of it turned up somewhere inside the work anyway — and that's the habit these guides are built on.
Every command is run on a clean machine before it's printed, and everything is written for the person who has never seen the tool before — because that person was me.

Seven pages from the Python guide — the start of CheckMate, the small task tracker the code guides build. It shows you exactly how a guide reads: what the tool is for, where it fits in a real app, and how the next guide picks the project up. Send us an address and it lands in your inbox in a moment.
The Python Quick Start Guide is 25 pages — instant download, yours to keep, and the first step of a series that ends with a live site.
